Stump Grinding

Remove problem stumps and roots so you can use your space again, without tearing up your yard.

Stump grinder attachment on a compact track loader

Our stump grinding setup

  • High-torque Fecon Stumpex grinder mounted on a CAT 265 compact track loader.
  • Built for large hardwood stumps, multiple stumps, and clustered problem areas.
  • Lower RPM, high-torque cutting action compared to many spinning-wheel grinders.
  • More controlled chip throw and a focused work zone around the stump.

Compared to many conventional stump grinders, this setup is generally quieter and more controlled, with fewer fully exposed, high-speed cutting surfaces. That means fewer surprises and a safer-feeling work area around homes, fences, and landscaping.

On most residential jobs, we also use ground protection mats anywhere we need to cross finished turf. This helps keep track marks and turf damage to a minimum, especially in soft Florida yards.

Big machine, hourly pricing

Our equipment is designed for economies of scale. On many jobs, we can grind four to five stumps in the same time a smaller grinder might handle one. Because of that, charging a flat per-stump fee doesn’t reflect the actual work very well.

Instead, we keep pricing simple and transparent:

  • $175/hour for machine and operator.
  • 2-hour minimum for all stump jobs.
  • Normal use of ground protection mats on turf access routes is included.
  • Optional add-ons for chip hauling, extended root work, and backfilling.

You only pay for the time actually required, and the machine is built to get the work done quickly.

Common add-ons

  • Chip hauling: Chips loaded into a dump trailer and hauled off-site (charged per load plus time and any dump fees).
  • Chip spreading: Grindings spread in beds or other areas instead of left in a pile.
  • Lateral root removal: Surface roots extending many feet from the stump removed with a root grapple (billed hourly).
  • Hole backfilling: Chips pulled back into the hole, or fill material brought in if requested.
  • Extended ground protection: Extra mats and handling for very long or extremely soft access routes, quoted as needed.

Example pricing

As an example, a typical residential job with several stumps near a driveway might look like:

  • Approximately 3 hours of grinding (2-hour minimum plus 1 additional hour).
  • Standard ground protection mats used along turf access paths.
  • One dump trailer load of chips hauled away.
  • Some lateral surface roots removed in the lawn.
  • Holes backfilled with grindings for safety.

Final pricing depends on the number of stumps, layout of the yard, access, and which options you choose. Before any work starts, we walk the job with you and give a time estimate so you know what to expect.

Stump grinding FAQ

How do you price stump grinding?

We charge by the hour with a 2-hour minimum. Our CAT 265 and Fecon Stumpex setup is very efficient, so you only pay for the time actually required, instead of a flat per-stump fee.

Will stump grinding damage my yard?

On most residential jobs we use ground protection mats anywhere we need to cross finished turf. This, combined with careful travel paths, helps keep track marks and turf damage to a minimum.

Do you haul away the stump grindings?

We can haul grindings away in a dump trailer for an additional charge, or leave and/or spread them onsite depending on your preference.

What areas do you serve?

We primarily serve Hillsborough and Pasco County, Florida, and can sometimes travel slightly outside that area for the right project.
